DIET

Of all Tom and Ethel Stamp’s kids, I was the most finicky to feed. Even after the war, when my dad returned from active service in the Merchant Navy, food and cash were scarce. Nothing was ever thrown away. All grub recycled. Today, I feel we were lucky growing up with such a maternal mother who was an exceptional cook, because although much of what we ate didn’t have much nutritional substance, the tender loving care with which it was prepared probably made up for it. The efficiency of the young child’s system can’t be overlooked either. Even so, I had a kaleidoscope of ailments. Usually fixed by removing the symptom. My tonsils were taken at three, my appendix at twelve. Naughty organs sharply cut out. It was only at twenty-six when I was diagnosed with ulcers that I began putting my past symptoms together and realised that punishing the offending symptom may very well have been disguising the cause, driving it deeper and increasing the discomfort. Left to my own devices and the lack of the heart-warming cuisine of my mother, my digestive problems escalated.

At the start of my adventure with film director Federico Fellini in Rome, I was having intimations that abdominal pains could affect my work. Yet as they say in the East, when the pitch of the individual’s cry is right, the solution appears. Fellini appointed a translator to help me get by when he wasn’t around. The wonderful Patricia was also an astrologer. She advised the Maestro himself, I believe. She explained to me that far from being the culprit, the digestive system of the Cancerian archetype (me) is more like its barometer. I could, for example, refrain from eating meat and fish and see if anything changed. It did. I only intended to take it on board for three months, but after three months the condition had improved considerably. I thought, no need to rush back into roast beef. My mother, of course, thought I would die, yet accommodated the vagaries of my new diet.

On the downside, after the initial improvement, the pain in the upper gut returned. However, the slow revolution and return to organic “health” food was starting. I no longer felt so isolated. The world of healthy eating manifested in much the same way that the world of actors manifested when I began drama school.

It began to dawn on us youngsters of the Sixties that all the differing “worlds” were happening at the same time. A shift or change of vibration was the only travel ticket needed. A particular evening changed my focus. The male half of the singing duo Nina and Frederik, or Baron Frederik Van Pallandt, to give him his full due, had recently split from his wife Nina. I had helped him secure a set of chambers in the Albany.

The original house built in 1770 was sold by the Duke of York in 1802 when he was strapped for cash, for $37,000. The enterprising developers, Alexander Copeland and
